When you put an applique style block on layer 1 of a quilt, you need to make sure that the block has a square background patch. If the block does not, then the area behind the patches won't color because there is no patch to color in the first place. Also, if you set blocks on a Custom Set quilt, the white area behind the blocks can't be colored because there is no patch there.
