When I color, some patches will not color on the quilt

When you put a Motif block (applique patches without a background square behind them) on layer 1 of a quilt, the area behind the patches won’t color because there is no patch to color. Also, if you set blocks on a Custom Set quilt, the white area behind the blocks can’t be colored because there is no patch there.
