It’s important to understand how EQ calculates sizes for Variable Point and On-Point Layouts so that you’ll be sure to select the best one for your design.
- Select the Variable Point Layout for non-square block designs.
- Select the On-Point Layout when you want to use square blocks.
Variable Point blocks are measured across the diagonals of the diamond-shaped block. You can think of it as the horizontal and vertical measurement from point to point as illustrated below.
On the Layout tab in EQ, enter sizes for both Width and Height separately and remember this layout is not for square blocks so your numbers will not be the same.
You’ll see these sizes when you print the block.
The On-Point Layout should always be selected if you’re designing with square blocks. EQ measures along the edge of the block.
On the Layout tab in EQ, since the block is square, there is just one entry for the size.
When you’re ready to print, you’ll see different sizes. Don’t let this confuse you. In order for EQ to give you the correct overall size of your quilt, it needs to measure horizontally and vertically. EQ continues to measure that way for printing. The edge length is 9 inches. The horizontal and vertical measurements diagonally across the block equal 12.730 inches.
It’s important to understand how EQ measures and calculates so that you get the results you expect. In the examples below you can see how the overall size is affected by the choices.
The blue quilt is a Variable Point layout using 6″ for both width and height. The overall size of the center of the quilt is 18 inches.
The orange quilt is an On-Point layout using 6″ as the edge of the square blocks. When we measure horizontally and vertically on a single block, it is 8.49 inches and the overall size of the quilt’s center is 25.456 inches.
